FORMING THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF LEADERSHIP IN NURSING INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF PERSONAL CAREER MAP
The Personal Career Map was developed as a part of the Health Leadership Graduate Program School of Nursing. It is meant to offer a way of tracking personal leadership development. As leadership is learned through practice, the tool also offers you an opportunity to track your growth and development as a leader and your successes in leading.
Organization of the Tool
The Personal Career Map begins with baseline data on who you are, key elements of your life history, dominant values that guide your behavior and decisions on a daily basis, and reasons for entering nursing. There is also a place for entering your personal scores on self-assessment tools such as the Myers Briggs Type Indicators and the LEAD score. You may complete such tools several times in your career, so you will need to update the scores and date each one as one means of tracking your ongoing development as a leader.
The Personal Career Map format then asks you to determine your leadership characteristics that you possess at the time of beginning the fill in the Career Map, along with leadership skills and competencies that you currently possess (these may be defined from the self-assessment exercises you have completed). Next you are asked to think about and describe a vision of your preferred future as a leader in nursing and health care. In other words, where do you see yourself professionally in 2, 5, and 10 years, and what areas of leadership would you like to be involved in? Examples of leadership environments include professional or non-governmental organizations (civil societies interested in health), health professional academic environments, and health systems and organizations. Remember to consider local, regional, national, and international settings.
Once you have completed your vision of your leadership future, begin to identify specific goals for attaining this future and the needed leadership skills and competencies to meet these goals. It is advisable to think about networking with nurse leaders in the areas of leadership you are interested in developing, and to spend time observing and interviewing leaders you admire. The Leadership Profile is offered as a tool for recording and analyzing such observations and interviews, and the outcomes often assist one in identifying specific competencies needed to lead others as well as refine one’s vision of leadership.
Summary
The Personal Career Map is only a tool to facilitate your thinking about leadership – most importantly you personal development as a leader in nursing. It can be an important guide to strong leadership competency. Use it often, update it when needed, and enjoy your leadership journey!
