In recent decades, the healthcare landscape in the United States has evolved significantly from a biomedical model towards a biopsychosocial framework, particularly in addressing chronic diseases (Aggar et al., 2021). This shift has seen the emergence of interventions that emphasize social elements of care, such as health coaching, social prescribing, and community-based initiatives aimed at improving overall well-being and disease management (Carnes et al., 2017). Social prescription programs, like music on prescription, have shown promise in enhancing self-care skills, reducing complications, and addressing health disparities by fostering social support networks (Alliance for Healthier Communities, n.d.). To explore the nursing role in program design and implementation, I conducted an interview with a nurse executive manager (NE) from TGK Hospital, discussing the institution’s music on prescription initiative.
Interviewer: Tell us about a healthcare program within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?
Interviewee: The music on prescription program at TGK Hospital aims to connect elderly patients with chronic illnesses, such as Alzheimer’s dementia, cancer, and depression, to community-based music programs. The estimated annual cost of the program is approximately $45,000, with projected outcomes including improvements in general, mental, and emotional well-being, enhanced quality of life, and reduced levels of anxiety and depression (Husk et al., 2019). Ultimately, these outcomes translate into cost savings by reducing hospitalizations and enabling staff to focus on clinical priorities.
Interviewer: Who is your target population?
Interviewee: Our target population primarily comprises elderly patients diagnosed with chronic illnesses, especially those vulnerable to social isolation and its associated health impacts.
Interviewer: What is the role of the nurse in providing input for the design of this healthcare program? Can you provide examples?
Interviewee: Nurses play a crucial role in program design by identifying patients at risk of social isolation and those who would benefit from social prescription interventions. Their frontline experience and patient interactions inform program design decisions and contribute to the effectiveness of interventions (Pescheny et al., 2018).
Interviewer: What is your role as an advocate for your target population for this healthcare program? Do you have input into design decisions? How else do you impact design?
Interviewee: As a geriatric nurse practitioner, I advocate for vulnerable elderly patients by leveraging my clinical experience to highlight the impact of social isolation on health outcomes. I actively participated in evidence-based research to support the adoption of music on prescription, influencing program design and implementation (Aftab & Shah, 2017).
Interviewer: What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between the design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?
Interviewee: Nurses facilitate program implementation by establishing patient referrals and connecting them with appropriate services. During program design, nurses contribute to screening procedures and operational frameworks, ensuring alignment with patient needs. In implementation, nurses act as program champions, fostering community engagement and monitoring outcomes (Pescheny et al., 2018).
Interviewer: Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?
Interviewee: A successful program implementation requires collaboration across disciplines. Physicians are essential for identifying patients eligible for social prescriptions. Nurses, including community-based assistants, bridge patients to services based on individual needs. Hospital management plays a crucial role in resource allocation and strategic support for implementation (Alliance for Healthier Communities, n.d.).
Conclusion
The interview with TGK Hospital’s NE highlights the integral role of nurses in program design and implementation, particularly in social prescription initiatives like music on prescription. Nurses’ expertise in patient care and community engagement ensures that programs are tailored to meet the needs of vulnerable populations, ultimately improving health outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.

Detailed Assessment Instructions for the NURS 6050/5050 PA004 Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation Paper Assignment
Assignment: Advocating for the Nursing Role in Program Design and Implementation
As their names imply, the honeyguide bird and the honey badger both share an affinity for honey. Honeyguide birds specialize in finding beehives but struggle to access the honey within. Honey badgers are well-equipped to raid beehives but cannot always find them. However, these two honey-loving species have learned to collaborate on an effective means to meet their objectives. The honeyguide bird guides honey badgers to newly discovered hives. Once the honey badger has ransacked the hive, the honey guide bird safely enters to enjoy the leftover honey.
Much like honeyguide birds and honey badgers, nurses and health professionals from other specialty areas can—and should—collaborate to design effective programs. Nurses bring specialties to the table that make them natural partners to professionals with different specialties. When nurses take the requisite leadership in becoming involved throughout the healthcare system, these partnerships can better design and deliver highly effective programs that meet objectives NURS 6050 Policy and Advocacy for Improving Population Health.
In this Assignment, you will practice this type of leadership by advocating for a healthcare program. Equally as important, you will advocate for a collaborative role of the nurse in the design and implementation of this program. To do this, assume you are preparing to be interviewed by a professional organization/publication regarding your thoughts on the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.
To Prepare:
- Review the Resources and reflect on your thinking regarding the role of the nurse in the design and implementation of new healthcare programs.
- Select a healthcare program within your practice and consider the design and implementation of this program.
- Reflect on advocacy efforts and the role of the nurse in relation to healthcare program design and implementation.
The Assignment: (2–4 pages)
In a 2- to 4-page paper, create an interview transcript of your responses to the following interview questions:
- Tell us about a healthcare program, within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?
- Who is your target population?
- What is the role of the nurse in providing input for the design of this healthcare program? Can you provide examples?
- What is your role as an advocate for your target population for this healthcare program? Do you have input into design decisions? How else do you impact design?
- What is the role of the nurse in healthcare program implementation? How does this role vary between design and implementation of healthcare programs? Can you provide examples?
- Who are the members of a healthcare team that you believe are most needed to implement a program? Can you explain why?
