Analyze theories from nursing and relevant fields with respect to their components, relationships among the components, logic of the propositions, comprehensiveness, and utility to advanced nursing. (PO#1) Florence Nightingale is considered the founder of nursing. It wasn’t until the 1950s and 1960s, almost 100 years after Florence Nightingale’s Notes on Nursing, that nursing leaders initiated an effort to define or explain why and how the profession of nursing is different from other healthcare professions. The major impetus of this push was to develop a theory that, in the words of Florence Nightingale, would describe what is and what is not nursing (Parker & Smith, 2010). In the 1950s, Hildegard Peplau described a model that concentrated on interpersonal relationships which focused on the patient’s problem and the need for nursing care. In 1982, Patricia Benner’s theory focused on the nurse from a level of a novice to that of an expert and examined the identified needs of each level. Nursing theory is the foundation of building block for the entire profession. Different events throughout history have designed nursing into its current conceptual framework. Nursing is ever changing and evolving. Describe your thoughts about one of the historical phases of theory development. In order words, what theory are you most interested in and why?
