The first setting mentioned was the street where the two met. They met on the High Street in Marchbury. This setting left and air of wonder and question in regards to why this person would be approaching Mr. Dale. This led to Mr. Dale wondering, why the other gentleman was approaching him. The feeling of this setting was an air of familiarity, until he had noticed the stranger, from the church.
The second setting was Mr. Dale’s home. While in the public street, there was talk about moving the conversation to Mr. Dale’s home, it left the conversation with an air of mystery. Once at the home, the feeling seemed more relaxed and conversational. It allowed for them to talk in a more private setting. This still left a slight feeling of secrecy to the conversation. The street had been a more straight forward conversation about impersonal matters.
There was a third place that was mentioned, during the conversation that was showing a specific feeling for the two of them. That would be the cathedral, where the main character was singing, which would be the reason for the Mr. Poulter to want to speak with Mr. Dale, about the singing that was done. Along with wanting to make the proposal for Mr. Dale to sing some of the jingles that he had written for his company Poulter’s Pills.
In this story, there were two primary settings and one that was just mentioned in the story, through their conversation. Each of these places left a specific thought or feeling about the story and the characters.
The church was able to show that the two men had a similar belief system, when it comes to religion. The street offered as a pleasant and public place for the two men to be able to meet and discuss the church and Mr. Dale’s singing. The last was the home, which offered a private meeting place to conduct a business proposal discussion.
