Homework assignments are graded on a 12-point scale, with each of the four required paragraphs worth between 1 and 3 points.
For each paragraph, you will receive 2 points for a “satisfactory” job, 3 points for an “excellent” job, but only 1 point if your paragraph “needs
improvement.” For each paragraph specifically:
Argument explanation:
• 3 points – clear, concise, and thorough explanation of 1 argument from text phrased as 1 sentence.
• 2 points – clear attempt to explain 1 argument from text phrased as 1 sentence.
• 1 point – confusing attempt to explain argument and/or phrased as more than one sentence.
Objections to argument:
• 3 points – clear, concise, and thorough statement of objections that relate directly to the argument explained in paragraph one; no extraneous discussion or
summary; insightful comments about specific points.
• 2 points – clear attempt to raise objections that relate to the argument explained in paragraph one; some extraneous discussion or summary; some insightful
comments about specific points.
• 1 point – confusing attempt to raise objections and/or they do not relate directly to the argument explained in paragraph one; few insightful comments about
specific points; extraneous discussion or summary.
Defenses against objections:
• 3 points – clear, concise, and thorough defenses that directly refute the objections raised in paragraph two; no extraneous discussion or summary; insightful
comments about specific points.
• 2 points – clear attempt to refute the objections raised in paragraph two; some extraneous discussion or summary; some insightful comments about specific
points.
• 1 point – confusing attempt to refute objections and/or they do not relate directly to the objections raised in paragraph two; few insightful comments about
specific points; extraneous discussion or summary.
Evaluating each objection vs. each defense:
• 3 points – clear, concise, and thorough evaluation of each objection vs. each defense; no repetition of previously made points; insightful additional
argumentation given.
• 2 points – clear attempt to evaluate each objection vs. each defense; some repetition of previously made points; some insightful additional argumentation
given.
• 1 point – confusing attempt to evaluate each objection vs. each defense and/or failure to evaluate each; repetition of previously made points; little
insightful additional argumentation given.
